Bellus Angelfish (Genicanthus Bellus)

Behavior: The Bellus Angelfish, also known as the Ornate Angelfish, is a peaceful and relatively shy species compared to other angelfish. These fish are known for their gentle demeanor and are best kept in pairs or small groups. They are active swimmers and enjoy plenty of open space in the aquarium.

Color: Bellus Angelfish exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males and females displaying different coloration. Females have a striking pattern with a light blue to white body and bold black vertical stripes. Males are equally beautiful, featuring a predominantly white body with a yellow dorsal fin and blue accents on the edges of their fins.

Diet: Bellus Angelfish are omnivores with a preference for a varied diet. They thrive on a mix of high-quality angelfish preparations, marine algae, and meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feedings of sponges and tunicates will help mimic their natural diet and promote optimal health and coloration.

Tankmates: Bellus are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other peaceful fish. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food is not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Bellus Angelfish are considered reef-safe with caution. While they generally do not harm corals, they may occasionally nip at soft corals and sessile invertebrates. Monitoring their behavior and ensuring they are well-fed can help minimize the risk of unwanted coral nipping.

Max Size: Bellus Angelfish typically grow to about 7 inches (18 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 120 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Bellus Angelfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the reefs of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.

Sexual Dimorphism: Male and female Bellus Angelfish can be distinguished by their coloration. Females have a light blue to white body with bold black vertical stripes, while males have a white body with a yellow dorsal fin and blue accents on their fins.

Interesting Facts:

  • Bellus Angelfish are relatively rare in the aquarium trade and are prized for their beauty and peaceful nature.
  • In the wild, these angelfish are often found at depths ranging from 100 to 200 feet, making them one of the deeper-dwelling species of angelfish.
  • They are known for their longevity and can live for several years in captivity with proper care and a well-maintained environment.
  • Bellus Angelfish are a favorite among experienced aquarists due to their stunning appearance and compatibility with other peaceful fish species.
